Brooklyn keeps on making it, Queens keeps on creating it, Manhattan keeps on faking it, and the Bronx keeps on taking it?

Hip-Hop heads all know BDP's infamous diss,"Manhattan keeps on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it Bronx keeps creating it, and Queens keeps on faking it." The following documentary "Founding Fathers: The Untold Story of Hip-Hop", on the surface, is a film about Brooklyn and Queens DJs refuting the Bronx's claim to fame as ground zero for Hip-Hop Culture. Despite the bravado and to be honest almost defensive vibe of the interviewees, this film is really a heartfelt piece about the love, friendship and ingenuity of early DJs and sound system crews that brought the communities of Brooklyn and Queens together for a few heady years in the early to late 70s. The film also, unwittingly, raises the question, why wasn't engineering established as one of the pillars/elements of Hip-Hop? The demand for more bass and ease of DJing pushed these early DJs to forward new forms of sound amplification and innovate technology that allowed to blend and mix with greater skill and precision. Lets hope this film reaches far and wide and helps assure the people in it a prominent place in the history of Hip-Hop.

Forro and Reggae Dancing Styles

Forró Brazuca: Forró pra fazer a moçada suar do gogó ao mocotó! (Forro to make the girls sweat from their neck to their ankles)

Forró Brazuca is a Bay Area Brazilian band that specializes in roots music from the Northeast of Brazil. Z'Amico, my Brazilian Reggae project will be performing with Forro Brazuca on Oct 21rst at Ashkenaz in South Berkeley.

Here is some background on Forró and a glimpse of new Reggae/Forró styles that are emerging in Brazil.

Forró is a catch-all term like salsa that represents several diverse styles. The most common Forro rhythms have a lot in common with reggae. The Xote (from Shottische, the Bohemian Polka that was popular in the 1850s) has an island "one-drop" feel and is commonly danced by couples.

Not surprisingly, a lot of Northeasterners dance reggae as if it were a Xote. Some call this the Maranhense dance style, coming from the state of Maranhao, the reggae capital of Brazil. Here is a clip of the "Maranhense" or Northeast style being danced in Alagoas:

Here is another clip of the style from San Luis, Maranhao:

Here is a clip of some early dancehall from Jamaica with couples dancing inna a rub-a-dub style.

Some rhythms just make you wanna wind up your waist!

Viagens 77

The Second Festival of Black & African Arts and Culture of 1977 (FESTAC 77) in Lagos, Nigeria was essentially Africa and the African Diaspora's answer to the World's Fair. While the World's fair fetishized the Exotic "Other" for the consumption of Europeans and Americans, FESTAC 77 was an entirely different cultural project however flawed it may have been. The ideas was to bring Africans, and people of African descent together in order to rediscover their roots as well as establish ties with and within Motherland Africa.

Nigeria's rebel son, Fela Kuti, openly critized and refused to perform at FESTAC 77 because of the Nigerian military dictatorship's sponsership of the event. He organized at counter-FESTAC 77 and many international black luminaries made their way to his Lagos Shrine, such as Stevie Wonder, Gilberto Gil, Bob Marley, Bembeya Jazz, Roy Ayers and Sun Ra.

This eclectic mix is inspired by those legendary cultural jam sessions that occured on the FESTAC 77 main stage and the after hours ones that happened at Fela's Kalakuta Republic and the Shrine.

This is essentially a world music mix from a Brazilian perspective with rhythms and sounds you don't hear on typical Brazilian compilations. It ventures into some lesser known territory such as Samba-Chula, Griot Music, Afro-beat, Frevo, Ciranda, Marchas, Afoxe/Gnawa, Guinea-Bissau Gumbe and more.....enjoy!
